संध्याकाळी नऊ आणि दहा दिवस या उत्सवाचे कौतुक केले जाते. दहावा दिवस म्हणजे विजयादशमी, दसरे.
महाराष्ट्रात, तरुण स्त्रिया नवरात्रात उधळपट्टी करतात व ते आश्चर्यकारकपणे तरुण वयातच उमटतात – अगदी अगदी 8 वर्षे वयाच्या. पूर्वीच्या काळात या छोट्या छोट्या छोट्या मुली ‘भोंडला / हडगा’ पाळत असत.
या दिवसात सूर्य “राशि” हत्ती (हत्ती) नावाच्या राशीच्या तेराव्या तारांकित समूहात जात आहे. महाराष्ट्राच्या विदर्भात भोंडला अन्यथा ‘भुलाबाई’ म्हणतात. नऊ दिवसांदरम्यान, नर्सरीमध्ये किंवा रात्रीच्या वेळी घरातल्या मुलीच्या महिला साथीदारांचे स्वागत करुन अंगणात. हत्ती एकतर घाणीवर रांगोळीने किंवा रेकॉर्डवर खडूसह काढला जातो आणि मध्यभागी ठेवला जातो. त्या युवती एकमेकांच्या हाताला धरुन भोन्डलाच्या धुन गात असतात. सर्व भोंडला che पारंपारिक सूर आहेत. शेवटचा सूर नियमितपणे ‘… खिरपतीला का ग?’ या शब्दांनी संपतो. (‘आज कोणती खास डिश आहे?’). ही ‘खिरापत’ ही एक अनोखी डिश किंवा डिश आहे जे नियमितपणे यजमान युवतीच्या आईने बनवलेली असते .
